| WELCOME TO LAPORTE COUNTY!, one of Indiana's largest counties covering approximately 600 square miles of diverse country side. Lake Michigan and the Vineyards of southern Michigan bound our north border and the Kankakee River - which eventually flows into the Mississippi River - is our southern boundary. We treasure nature's diverse make up of farm fields, lakes and the rolling wooded hills in the north near Lake Michigan. La Porte County has two larger towns and ten smaller rural communities which allow our residents to choose any Indiana lifestyle they desire. La Porte, the county seat, and Michigan City, the largest town, comprise about half of our population. La Porte County is strategically located between Chicago - only 60 miles to our west and South Bend - home of Notre Dame - only 30 miles to our east. Indiana University and Purdue University have regional campuses nearby and Valparaiso University is about 25 miles to the west. Several other institutions of higher education are within 50 miles. We take pride in the educational advancement that these fine institutions provide. Nine state highways, Interstate 94 and the Indiana Toll Road criss-cross the county giving us an important transportation network with the entire midwest.
